The Small Voice

Prefer to Listen?

I was at a big sales meeting this week. A couple hundred people, and at some point they opened the mic for questions.

A woman near me had one. A real one, about how to handle a process that had changed, the kind of question half the room was probably carrying. I could tell she was weighing it. I heard a small voice: encourage her. So I did. I told her the answer would serve more people than just her.

She got the mic, stated her name, and asked, with everyone listening. And the answer she got back wasn't really one. Not clear, not definitive. She sat down with all of that exposure and none of the payoff. It would have been easy to feel like she shouldn't have stood up and opened her mouth in that big room. I've been her, replaying a moment like that on the drive home.

But later, the head of the sales team found her. He told her she was right, the answer wasn't as clear as it should be, and that he'd work to get one. He didn't have to do that. A hundred things were competing for him that day. I wonder if he heard a small voice too: go find her, so she isn't stranded in that moment. My respect for him grew hearing about it.

That's been my lesson of 2026: live generously. Most of the time, it starts with a small voice. The nudge to send the text. To compliment the haircut. To follow up on something someone said last week. To make the lunch plans instead of meaning to. None of it seems significant, and it might mean more to someone than we'll ever find out.

Here's the thing about ignoring the voice. You don't exactly leave regret behind you. You leave something quieter: a pile of unattended blessings. Moments where you could have been the one, and weren't. I imagine it sometimes: the unsent texts, the compliments that died in my throat, stacked up somewhere like unopened mail addressed to other people.

I don't think the voice is random. I think it's curated. Meant for exactly you, in exactly that moment.

And here's the grace in it: most of the pile keeps. The text you didn't send in March still works today.

Thought for the Week: Listen for the small voice this week. What's the one you've been sitting on?
